Lake St. Louis Auto Insurance

Auto Insurance

Every driver in Lake St. Louis must have auto insurance as a condition to maintain a driver's license in the state of Missouri. The state also delineates the minimum requirements that your insurance coverage must meet. Here's what you need to know.

Minimum Auto Insurance Coverage Requirements

Your auto insurance must include the following three coverage categories:

  • Bodily Injury Liability - If you cause a car accident, you'll need to cover the medical bills for others involved in the accident if they sustained any injuries. Your coverage must include at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. You can also increase these levels for additional protection if you like.
  • Property Damage Liability - If there is damage to another person's vehicle, home, business or other structure in an accident that is your fault, you'll need property damage liability coverage. Your minimum coverage requirement in this category is $10,000. But again, you can increase your coverage for added peace of mind. Keep in mind that this coverage is only for other people's property, not your own.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage - While this type of coverage is optional in many jurisdictions, it is required in the state of Missouri -- including in Lake St. Louis. This coverage will protect you in case you are involved in an accident with another driver who does not have insurance, despite the legal requirements. You must have at least $25,000 in coverage per person and $50,000 per accident.

Optional Auto Insurance Coverage

As previously mentioned, you can increase your coverage in all of the above categories beyond the minimum requirements if you so choose. Some auto loan lenders may also require you to have additional coverage as a condition of your loan. You can also include optional coverage, like Collision and Comprehensive, for additional protection for your own vehicle.
